#RichardFuller intervention on the Trade Union Bill (#TUbill) Clause 2 – Ballots: 50% turnout requirement (10 Nov 2015)

Richard Fuller (Conservative)

“My hon. Friend has spoken about problems with processes, but we are talking about some of the most venerable institutions in our country: trade unions. At this early stage of the Parliament, with five years of important discussions to have with trade unions across the country on wages, terms and conditions, productivity and efficiencies, does he want to say to trade union leaders that the Government do not trust them to run a ballot?”

Nick Boles (Minister)

“I want to say to trade union leaders that when they can overcome the objections listed not by me, but by experts from groups such as the Open Rights Group, the Government will be happy to work with them to implement new forms of balloting. Until then, however, we remain to be persuaded.

My hon. Friend the Member for Huntingdon is right that there is no requirement for primary legislation to introduce new forms of balloting. It can be done under powers in section 54 of the Employment Relations Act 2004. On that basis, I urge the House to reject the amendments.”

Nick Boles should get on to Conservative Central Office about the use of Electronic Ballots, it would appear they’re not aware of the objections by the experts. He should also the Open Rights Group website and take a look at their work and values. He might learn something. Open Rights Group say, “We uphold human rights like free expression and privacy.  We condemn and work against repressive laws or systems that deny people these rights.” Oops are you listening Tories.

Are the Tories turning into New Age Fascists?

Still, Richard Fuller does hit the nail on the head when he asks, “with five years of important discussions to have with trade unions across the country on wages, terms and conditions, productivity and efficiencies, does he want to say to trade union leaders that the Government do not trust them to run a ballot?”

I think the answer is yes. Richard Fuller also knows that we don’t trust the Tories, and we are not the only ones.
